The Wave of Death
The widespread destruction inflicted by last week's Tsunami has spared few Asian nations. India's coastal states were no exception. By some accounts, almost 10 percent of the population of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been wiped out by the tidal wave. Tamil Nadu is the worst hit in terms of the death toll. The numbers keeps rising by the day and the picture remains decidedly grim.
Relief organizations are getting mobilized but this is a natural disaster of epic proportions. The government of India is contemplating a 1% tax for Tsunami relief efforts. Employees of my company are donating one day's salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. The Indian president has canceled his new year's celebration plans and we too have decided to follow in his footsteps. Instead of aimlessly blowing money on some extravagant new year's party, it just feels right to put it to a better and much needed use.
